TV MIDSEASON REPORT

We are now in mid-February and most shows on the Fall – Spring schedule have premiered their Winter premieres. There also have been a smattering of Mid-Season premieres such as the eagerly anticipated 5th season of NEW GIRL as well as the return of FBI Agents Mulder and Scully.

Let’s take a look at the season this has been in the Nerd world and I’ll let you know if I think sticking with these shows until the end and beyond is in your best interest.

Let’s start with the creative group that is dominating the CW and extended it’s reach into big boy pants territory or big girl as it were, with a hit show on one of the big 4, CBS. I am talking about Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Marc Guggenheim and the great Geoff Johns.

I kinda love these people.

I kinda love these people.

THE FLASH is still my number 1 of these 4 and just might be my favorite show in TV right now. Not since SMALLVILLE have I needed to watch a new episode almost immediately after it airs, still can’t do commercials. I hungrily await each new adventure with a ravenous anticipation that would rival a starving wolf pack who just happen to stumble on a family of deer. This show is so good and their recent journey to Earth 2 just further reinforces that these people know what they are doing and they are bringing it every week.

ARROW, while inconsistent in it’s first season and half has hit the gas pedal since and continues to improve.

Green is my favorite color.

“Green is my favorite color.” Oliver Queen

SUPERGIRL meanwhile has had me stuck since day 1. Melissa Benoist is earnest, intelligent, adorable and so SUPER! She is more than worthy of the S on her chest. This show has me in tears almost as much as Flash. Since SG is on CBS it has a bit more of a challenge in the ratings department than it’s CW counterparts but I believe it’s holding it’s own just fine. See short sited bean counters, there is a market for female superheroes.

She's so strong, smart and adorable. I've met her and her husband Blake. He's a lucky man and best part, he knows it!

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is just comic book goodness overload. Nothing has come closer to a comic page come to life as this team-up, time travelling adventure. Some may say it suffers from too many characters-itus. Those people haven’t been paying attention. We have already spent plenty of time with these characters, with the exception of Rip Hunter, on their sister shows that they are able deliver action packed thrillers every week.

I love this poster so much.

GOTHAM may not be part of the Berlanti team but I am still enjoying the Rise of the Villains and the formative years of the man who will become the Bat. The first season was a bit uneven but towards the end of Season 2A, it really started hitting it’s stride. I really like the young man(David Mazouz) who plays the teen Bruce Wayne as well as Sean Pertwee’s Alfred and his struggle with becoming a surrogate parent to Bruce. I really hope this show gets enough season that we see Mazouz become the vigilante that will one day be Batman ala Matt Murdock in season 1 of Daredevil. Robin Lord Taylor and Cory Michael Smith as the Oswald ‘Penquin’ Cobblepot and Edward “Someday The Riddler” Nygma still bring every time on screen and will be exciting to one day see them battle with Bruce the Vigilante.

One day both of them will be as dangerous as their relationship. I really hope this show lasts so we can see these kids grow into that.

Bruce and Selina. There are so cute together.

As far as their competition goes, Marvel’s AGENTS OF SHIELD has definitely gotten better, especially since they are not restricted by yet to be released movies. And I could watch Clark Gregg in anything, but it still hasn’t inspired me to give it the fanatical love I give the DC shows. I have still not seen AGENT CARTER since they refuse to stream it. However, on Netflix they are killing it. I am on episode 10 of JESSICA JONES and holy Hell’s Kitchen it’s just as good as the amazing DAREDEVIL!!! Season 2 of DD is dropping March 18, just over a month a way. THE PUNISHER!! I can’t wait for Luke Cage & the Iron Fist shows to drop, especially since the latter has hired SIX FEET UNDER and DEXTER show runner/Executive Producer Scott Buck.

The X-FILES has come back in a big way retaining the 13 million viewers it left the airwaves with in 2002. 1st episode was a little shaky, 2nd was better. 3 and 4 were amazing and some of the best hours I have ever spent watching television. If I get 6 episode season every couple of years, I am happy Truth is Out There’er. Mulder and Scully are back and sincerely hope they are here to stay.

"Give me back my hair product!"

“You erased Game of Thrones from the DVR!?!!”

I’ve seen the first SHANARA CHRONICLES and it’s aiight. But it needs to get better. And quick.

COLONY is burning a hole in my DVR, I am excited about it but I think I am going to wait until they are all out and binge it.

LUCIFER is very, very fun. It’s like the MENTALIST except with Satan using his supernatural abilities instead of, well mentaling. Though it in no way resembles it’s source material. I hope they edge closer to THE SANDMAN source when that eventually hits our TV screens or movie screens whichever they decide.

Speaking of SUPERNATURAL, can’t believe how much I am enjoying the 11th , wait, let me say that again…11th!!!! Season of the Winchester Boys.

"End of the world... We got this."

“End of the world… We got this.”

"Can we do this without Dad?"

As far as all the comedies I watch: NEW GIRL, MODERN FAMILY, BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, BIG BANG THEORY, FRESH OFF THE BOAT, GOLDBERGS, BLACK-ish, LAST MAN ON EARTH, THE MUPPETS, THE MINDY PROJECT, SOUTH PARK, FAMILY GUY, THE SIMPSONS, AMERICAN DAD, BOB’S BURGERS, THE GRINDER, BROAD CITY, LAST MAN STANDING… I’m still on board with all of them.
